About Zvornik
Briefly about our city
Zvornik is the city and center of the municipality in the eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the eastern slopes of Majevica. It belongs to the Republika Srpska administratively.
Zvornik has a good geostrategic position because it crosses important roads towards Sarajevo, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Bijeljina and Tuzla. It is almost geographically located right in the middle of the road for three large urban centers: Belgrade, Novi Sad and Sarajevo. Over four bridges on the Drina River take place road (Karakaj, Šepak), railway (north of the city) and pedestrian (Old Bridge in Zvornik) with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the area of the municipality there is an archaeological site - the Roman quarry in the Dardagani from the 1st - 5th century. It consists of one underground mine and two surface. It was the largest Roman quarry in Pannonia. Near Šepak archaeologists found the remains of a Roman road in the length of 3 km.
Zvornik was first mentioned in 1410, under the name Zvonik, and in 1519 under the present name Zvornik. The Zvornik old town (fortress) builted much earlier, probably in the second half of the 13th or at the beginning of the 14th century.
